Copiers and printers are important parts of your business and your workflow, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re always on your side. If your machines are giving you trouble, check out this list of DIY solutions to get them back in line!

When to Call the Experts

No matter how good you are with copiers and printers, there’s going to come a day when you just don’t have the right tools, information, and expertise to solve a problem–and that’s okay. As long as you perform regular maintenance and treat the machines well, you’re doing your job; certified technicians can handle the rest.

Of course, some problems can be handled in-house. If the issue is common and you feel fairly confident, you might be able to try one of these DIY tricks to get the job done. (Remember, if you’re unsure or if the problem seems complicated, call the experts!)

Problem #1: No printing

When printers aren’t doing the one thing they’re supposed to do–print–it can seem like a catastrophe. Before you panic, though, there are a few things you can check. Make sure the machine is plugged in, connected to the network, and full on paper and toner. You should also check to be sure that the print job didn’t get sent to a different machine.

Problem #2: Bad printing

If your machines are ruining your documents or doing low-quality work, you might want to check your settings and functions. Also make sure that you’re using the right kind of paper–but if that’s not the issue, you might need to clean the copier or printer (because debris can sometimes impact quality).

Problem #3: Paper jams

Paper jams are pretty common. Luckily, today’s copiers and printers are pretty helpful, and will essentially tell you exactly where the problem is so that you can fix it. To avoid this issue, remember to load paper appropriately, load it carefully, and keep it clean and dry in storage.
